PVC vs Wood Fence in Florida: Which Should You Choose?
· By Leonardo Ferreira

A fence closes the yard, gives privacy around the pool and finishes the look of a new patio or turf area. In South Florida, the two most common choices are wood and PVC, also called vinyl. Our climate makes the decision a little different than in other parts of the country.
Humidity and rot
Wood in a humid climate needs protection. Without stain or sealer, boards can warp, gray and eventually rot, especially near sprinklers and wet soil. PVC does not rot or absorb water, which is one of its biggest advantages here.
Termites and insects
Termites are a real concern in Florida. Treated lumber resists them better than untreated wood, but PVC is not food for insects at all.
Wind
Florida fences need to handle strong wind. For any material, post depth, spacing and installation quality matter. Some areas have specific requirements, so ask about them during the estimate.
Maintenance
Wood needs periodic staining or painting to look good and last. PVC needs only occasional washing to remove mildew and dirt.
Cost
Wood usually costs less to install. PVC usually costs more up front but often less to maintain over the years.
Look
Wood has a warm, natural look and can be stained in different tones. PVC gives a clean, uniform look, most often in white or tan, and fits modern and Mediterranean homes well.
Pool fences and permits
Fences around pools may need to meet safety barrier rules, and most cities and many HOAs require a permit or approval for any new fence. Check your local requirements before you start.
Fence plus pavers and turf
If you are also installing pavers or turf, plan the fence in the same project. One crew can line up the fence posts, borders and grades so everything looks finished.
