Pool Deck Resurfacing vs Replacement: How to Choose
· By Leonardo Ferreira

Many older South Florida pools still have their original concrete deck, often with a textured cool deck coating. After years of sun and storms the coating peels, cracks show and the whole backyard looks tired. At that point homeowners usually compare two paths: resurfacing the existing deck, or replacing it with pavers, travertine or marble.
What resurfacing means
Resurfacing applies a new coating over the existing concrete slab. It refreshes the color and texture and covers small surface defects. It is usually faster and less expensive than a full replacement.
The catch is that it depends on the slab underneath. If the concrete is cracked, uneven or moving, a new coating will often crack in the same places.
What replacement means
Replacement removes the old deck, or in some cases builds over it, and installs a new surface such as concrete pavers, travertine or marble on a prepared base. It is a bigger project, but it gives you a new surface, a new look and the ability to fix drainage and slope at the same time.
Signs resurfacing may be enough
The slab is level, with no sections lifting or sinking.
Cracks are small and stable, not growing.
Water drains away from the pool and the house without puddles.
You mainly want a fresh color and texture.
Signs replacement is the better choice
Large or growing cracks, or slabs that move.
Areas where water ponds after every storm.
Trip edges where sections have shifted.
A coating that has been redone before and keeps failing.
You want a real upgrade in look, like travertine or a slab and turf design.
Cost and lifespan
Resurfacing usually costs less up front. Replacement with pavers or stone costs more, but you get a new system that can be repaired piece by piece in the future. If a coating would only buy a few years before problems return, replacement can make more sense over time.
Coping and tile
Whichever path you choose, look at the coping and the waterline tile. If they are old, cracked or out of style, the deck project is the natural moment to replace them, so the whole pool edge matches.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does a pool deck replacement take?
- It depends on size, removal and material. Your contractor should give you a schedule with the estimate.
- Can pavers go over an old cool deck?
- Sometimes, if heights and the slab condition allow. Often removal gives the best result.
- Do I need to drain the pool for deck replacement?
- Usually not for deck work alone. Coping and waterline work may require lowering the water.
