Brick Pavers vs Concrete Pavers: Differences That Matter

· By Leonardo Ferreira

Interlocking paver courtyard patio

People often call any paver a "brick paver," but there are two different products: true clay brick pavers, made from fired clay like building bricks, and concrete pavers, made from a cast concrete mix. Both are used for patios, walkways and driveways in South Florida, and each has strengths.

Color

Clay brick gets its color from the clay itself, so the color goes all the way through and holds up well in the sun. The palette is mostly natural reds, browns and tans.

Concrete pavers are colored with pigments and come in a much wider range of colors and blends, from greys and charcoals to whites and multicolor mixes. Strong sun can fade some concrete pavers over the years, and sealing helps keep the color.

Shapes and sizes

Clay brick pavers are usually rectangular and similar to building brick in size, which gives a classic look. Concrete pavers come in many shapes and sizes, including large format slabs that fit modern homes.

Strength and durability

Both can be very durable when installed on a proper base. Concrete pavers are commonly used on driveways because they are made in thicknesses designed for vehicle traffic. Clay pavers are dense and hard, and also hold up well when rated for the use.

Cost

In most markets, concrete pavers are the more affordable option and easier to find in many colors. Clay brick often costs more and has fewer choices, but many homeowners love its classic character.

Style

Red brick suits older homes and historic neighborhoods, like many in Delray Beach and West Palm Beach, as well as classic courtyards and garden paths. Concrete pavers fit almost any style, from Mediterranean homes in Boca Raton to modern builds with large slabs.

Patterns

Both can be laid in running bond, basket weave or herringbone. Herringbone is one of the strongest patterns for walkways and driveways because the pieces lock together and resist shifting.

Which to choose

Choose clay brick if you want a classic red brick look with lasting color and the budget allows. Choose concrete pavers if you want more colors and sizes, a modern look or a lower cost. Seeing samples next to your house is the easiest way to decide.
